On Facebook, Breckenridge Police Divulging The When And Where Of Traffic Enforcement

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - If you were driving in Breckenridge this week and "like" the police department's Facebook page, you'd likely know officers were enforcing traffic at Valley Brook and Airport Road from 11 a.m. to noon.

Later, they were patrolling streets near Breckenridge Elementary School from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. before they headed over to North French Street between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The police department wants you to know when and where they're lurking.

"What we're really after is just to make the town safer," Assistant Chief Dennis McLaughlin said. "That's our job and there's no secret to it."

In other words, there are no surprises from behind a shrub or billboard -- if you're glued to the department's page.

"Anywhere is fair game. It's just that concentrated traffic enforcement is in these locations," McLaughlin said. He noted officers will continue to heavily monitor school zones.

The initiative, which started Nov. 10, was hailed by some.

"The new traffic initiative is a welcome attitude of 'not out to get you' in this day of us vs. them law enforcement media stories," Maria Linzie wrote on the department's Facebook page.

McLaughlin said the positive aspect, aside from hoping for increased safety, has been the community's feedback.

"If we get more followers, we can get more critical information out during a critical incident. We can reach more people so there's a plus to that. But in reality it's to make the town a safer place," he said.
