BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Brighton are searching for witnesses to a serious crash that began as a shooting between two vehicles as the investigation reveals there may be more people involved.

The crash happened on Monday just after noon near southbound Highway 85 between 136th Avenue and 144th Avenue.

Police believe the occupants of a black Nissan were shooting at the occupants of a green Saab just before the crash.

"We think that they knew each other, but as far as what happened, they're not telling us," said Brighton Police spokesman Frank Acosta.

Officers arrested Santana D. Nanez, 34, of Brighton on charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Acosta said investigators are trying to figure out how many shots were fired.

"There may be one or more shooters in the vehicles," said Acosta.

Police are hoping witnesses to the crash or anyone with additional information will come forward.

"Any kind of reckless driving, vehicles chasing each other, maybe an argument at a previous location," said Acosta.

There were serious injuries among those in the Saab. One victim has a broken neck and broken back. No one was seriously hurt in the black Nissan.
