Some Who Used 'Connect For Health Colorado' Getting 2 Health Plan Bills

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) - Too much health insurance.

A Northern Colorado woman is getting bills for a plan she canceled months ago, and as CBS4 found out, she isn't the only one.

Each month Lauren Kearns' health insurance provider sends her two bills -- one for the health plan she wants, and one for the plan she says she canceled nearly five months ago.

"Somebody needs to voice this, because it's just not right that this is happening," Kearns said.

She signed up for insurance with the state's exchange, Connect for Health Colorado. Kearns selected a plan that Kaiser Permanente offers, and four months later, switched to one that was less expensive. But records show two accounts, and Kearns calls nearly every day for help.

"Without any follow through the customer is left hanging, so that is really distressing."

Kaiser Permanente says Kearns is not alone. The company is aware of what it calls "an issue affecting a relatively small number of our members who enrolled through the exchange ... and have multiple accounts ... we ... Apologize to any member who has received double bills as a result of this issue."

Connect for Health Colorado blames the problem on enrollment complications and says it's working on a solution as Kearns bills stack up to more than $1,200.

"They could send me to collections for the money for a plan I don't want that would ruin my credit," she said.

The state's Division of Insurance told CBS4 they are looking into Kearns' complaint. Kaiser Permanente said it would not send any customers receiving double bills to collections for unpaid fees while it works to solve the problem.
