Pregnant Woman, Young Girl Killed In Weld County Crash

AULT, Colo. (CBS4) - Two people died Monday evening in Weld County when a pickup truck collided with a semi-truck hauling logs.

Two others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. at Highway 14 and Weld County Road 31 when the white pickup truck tried to cross the intersection but didn't make it.

A man injured in the crash told bystanders, who rushed to help, that his pregnant wife and daughter were hurt. Authorities said neither survived. A third man was airlifted to Northern Colorado Medical Center. His condition wasn't released late Monday night. The pregnant woman was apparently driving.

The victims' names haven't been released.

The only people near the accident were working at a drill site. They told CBS4 they rushed to the scene to help.

The semi-truck driver wasn't hurt and hasn't been charged. He told troopers he tried to stop, but his brakes locked up. The logs he carried spilled across the road.

Troopers said this is at least the third deadly crash at this intersection, about 20 miles east of Fort Collins, in three years.

"The increase has been huge here in the last couple years. All we can tell people is to be aware of their surroundings and be paying attention to their driving," Duane Lewis, a trooper with the Colorado State Patrol, said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation removed the spilled logs Monday evening. The roadway reopened at 10 p.m.
