Adams County Couple Claims Raid Was Illegal, 'Felt Like A Movie'

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A confrontation with Adams County deputies has resulted in a lawsuit.

Home video shows what happened the night deputies stormed the home of a family who says the raid was illegal. The Adams County couple says the video is their proof that sheriff's deputies used excessive force and burst into their home in the middle of the night.

"How can we feel safe here now because of what happened. These are the people who are supposed to protect us," Kelly McCain said.

McCain says she, her husband and their teenage son were sleeping. A neighbor allegedly called 911, claiming guns were being fired in their backyard. The couple says it never happened, but police entered their home without a warrant.

Kelly's husband, who wants to remain anonymous, says he woke up to a guns pointed at his head.

"When the lights slammed on and then a second later I knew what it was at the back of my head, and someone saying, 'Don't move.' It almost felt like it was a realistic dream, I waking up in a movie," he said.

McCain says she was taken outside, her body exposed in a bathrobe and thrown to the ground. They both say they ended up with bruises and even a chipped tooth. McCain says eventually police left but they came back a second time after neighbors called 911 again the same night.

"The first incident was traumatic enough, but then, it's like, it's doesn't seem real -- it seems like a scene out of a movie," she said.

"They grab me, pull me out, rip me out of the door, threw me on the ground, jumped on my back, they had both of my hands behind my back handcuffed," McCain's husband said.

They are now suing the department.

"I feel more in fear of the police than I do anybody else at this point," McCain's husband said.

The lawsuit was served on Friday.

CBS contacted the Adams County Sheriff's Department. They said they weren't aware of the lawsuit.
