Woman In Critical Condition After Collision With Suspected Drunk Driver

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – A woman suffered critical life-threatening injuries after a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver in Aurora early Sunday morning.

According to Jeff Turner with Aurora police, at approximately 12:25 a.m. two cars were traveling westbound on East Colfax Avenue near Macon Street in the left lane when a man suspected of drunk driving was traveling eastbound on the wrong side of the road in a blue Dodge.

"The first driver saw the Dodge approaching head on and swerved to the right avoiding a crash," Turner said in a statement. "The second car, a silver Hyundai driven by an adult female, was struck head on by the Dodge."

Turner said the woman was taken to the hospital with serious bodily injuries and might not survive.

"Neither driver was wearing a seat belt. Had the female victim been wearing her seat belt it is probable her injuries would have been lessened and not life threatening," Turner said.

Investigators said excessive speed was suspected as a factor in the crash.

"This crash is yet another reminder for drivers to always wear seat belts. Seat belts are your best protection against serious injury or death in a crash," Turner said.
