Crime tape surrounded the parking lot of the store for several hours.

At least one shell casing was found outside the liquor store.

A construction worker was nearby when he heard what he thought might have been a rivet gun.

"There were two pops -- Pow! Pow! -- that's what it was," Charles Johnson told CBS4. "If I had knew it was two gunshots from over there I would have feared for my safety because you never know where a bullet's going."

The business owner said when he arrived to open his stores at 9 a.m. a man with a gun rushed over to his vehicle, tried to rob him and then pounded on the car door. That's when he got his gun, opened the door a crack and fired two shots.

"He has every right to protect himself. He works too hard to keep both of his businesses going," said one customer.

The suspect got away in the passenger seat of a green, 4-door Chevy Trailblazer that sped away. The business owner described the suspect as an Hispanic male in his 20s, about 5-foot-10, wearing a black mask, dark-colored T-shirt and hiking boots.

Police also appeared to be studying a silver sedan outside the liquor store closely as part of their investigation.
