DENVER (CBS4)– A family of five escaped an early morning house fire but had to be hospitalized for injuries. A firefighter was also taken to the hospital.
The fire broke out at the home in the 700 block of Newtown Street about 3 a.m.
Two men, two women and a boy all escaped the burning home. They were transported to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
One firefighter was also taken to the hospital for dehydration.
There is heavy smoke damage throughout the home. Firefighters said most of the damage seems to be concentrated in the back bedroom.
“The fire did spread, there is heavy smoke damage and the building is not able to be lived in,” said Denver Fire Department spokesman Mark Watson. “There is a back bedroom where most of the fire appears to be.”
Firefighters had to wear oxygen masks and other protective gear because of asbestos inside the home.
What caused that fire is still being investigated.
Everyone rushed to the hospital is expected to recover.
