GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS) – Scammers using AT&T to lure in victims made the wrong call in Jefferson County.
“I got a call saying this is AT&T and you’re entitled to a $32 rebate. It came in on the district attorney’s fraud hotline,” said Cary Johnson.
Johnson is a consumer fraud investigator for the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
“That’s ridiculous irony … where people are supposed to be calling in saying that fraud is occurring to them,” Johnson said, “We got a call that probably involved some kind of scam.”
AT&T said it hadn’t heard the specific message offering rebates but does warn there are many scams out there including ones asking customers to visit fake websites.
Johnson said this is a case if a call or message seems phony, it probably is.
“Legitimate businesses are never going to call to give you a rebate to say there’s a problem they’re going to solve with you,” Johnson said.
AT&T said it does not send email requests to customers asking for personal account or credit card information.
