Suspect Surrenders After Attempted Kidnapping Of Girl, 10

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A man has been arrested after he allegedly tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in Wheat Ridge.

The girl told police he grabbed her by the neck and dragged her approximately 40 feet down an alley around 3 p.m. She began to fight him off and screamed loudly, which got the attention of neighbors who came to her aid. The girl's dog she was walking also bit the suspect, police said.

Police arrested 35-year-old Dennis James Willmore Jr., a registered sex offender, after he fled to a nearby home and surrendered to police an hour later.

Police say he suffered some self-inflicted wounds and was taken to the hospital. He was convicted of kidnapping and attempted sexual assault on a child in 1999.

The suspect ran into a nearby house at 27th Avenue and Chase Street and eventually surrendered to police at approximately 4 p.m. Police say he suffered some self-inflicted wounds and was taken to the hospital.

The victim suffered minor injuries and scrapes.

"We were able to get one of our negotiators on the phone with him," John Romero, with Wheat Ridge police, said. "He eventually came out and we took him into custody."
