Heard's family lives 800 miles away in Fort Worth, Texas. They insist he would not have taken his own life.

"He was such a strong man. He cared for everyone," said Heard's mother Jamie.

There was a fight off campus at a house party on March 29, the night Heard disappeared. Heard was involved but to what extent has not been confirmed.

His body was found April 2 by police eight miles east of Gunnison.

"He told me that my son hung himself and committed suicide," said Gary. "Always upbeat, never had any issues with depression."

Heard also filled up his car with gas the day he went missing.

Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination of death. Those results could take another month.

Police said although they're still investigating, there is no suspect and there is no danger to other students. Police are asking for help in this case. Anyone who saw anything in the Gunnison area March 29 is asked to contact Gunnison Police.
