Vandals Target Mailboxes At A Denver Condo Complex

DENVER (CBS4) – Authorities say mailboxes at a Denver condominium complex have been targeted by vandals.

Two different cluster mailboxes were broken open at Jasmine Condominiums. It's happened three times in recent weeks with residents worried their checks may be stolen.

A notice warns residents about vandalism and possible theft of their outgoing mail.

Resident Sue said that four of her outgoing checks totaling $300 were stolen creating a huge hassle for her.

"I spent all day on the phone on Friday, deleting my checking account, deleting my charge cards," said Sue.

After opening a new checking account she'll have to wait for a monthly pension check to find her.

"I was flabbergasted," said Sue.

Residents said one of the mailboxes was vandalized two weeks ago, repaired and then damaged again last week.

People have been advised for the time being not to send their mail via the boxes.

"You have to protect yourself five times as hard as you had to back then, but now you have to be aware of what's going on and pick up your mail every single day," said resident Anna Archiveque.

Residents are being asked to pick up their mail at the post office, which isn't too much of an inconvenience, but Sue still wishes things were different.

"You want to live your life without worrying about somebody stealing your money," said Sue.

The Postal Service is reminding people to never leave mail in the mailbox overnight and to be on the lookout for suspicious people or vehicles.

Investigators are aware of what is happening and are still looking for suspects.

The penalty for tampering with mail is five years in jail and a $250,000 fine.
