Colorado Nuns Filing Challenge On Birth Control

DENVER (AP) - Denver nuns who operate nursing homes are poised to file a full federal court challenge to the national health care law's birth control rules.

The Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty, which is representing the Little Sisters of the Poor, said the full appeal would be filed Monday before the 10th Circuit.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court asked the nuns to write the Department of Health and Human Services declaring themselves a religious nonprofit group and noting their birth control objections. In return, the court said it would continue to exempt them from the contraceptive coverage requirement.

Health and Human Services says the rules accommodate the concerns of religious organizations and ensure that women who participate in such organizations' health plans are not denied access to contraceptive coverage without cost-sharing.
