10-Year-Old Crashes Car Into DMV

PARKER, Colo. (CBS4) – A 10-year-old girl crashed a car into a DMV office in Parker on Monday.

The vehicle was sitting in the parking lot of the DMV at Parker Road and E-470 when the girl climbed from the back seat into the front seat. Police said the girl told them that then "the car just went."

The car only went about 20 to 30 feet at a slow speed before crashing through the office wall, shattering glass from the windows, and coming to a stop in the waiting area.

There were 10 or 11 people in the office at the time but no injuries were reported.

Police said girl's mother ran up beside the vehicle and told her daughter how to apply the brakes and stop.

The mom told police the car was not left running when she went inside the office.

Authorities cited the 10-year-old for careless driving. Her mom won't face any charges.

"Maybe we'll use this as a learning tool. I don't think a judge wants to punish her too bad, but just make sure that she realizes what she did was wrong," said Sgt. Andrew Coleman.

The DMV office was shut down on Monday while repairs were made and is expected to be back open on Tuesday.
