Worn Bearings Ground Aspen Mountain Gondola

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Worn bearings in the Silver Queen Gondola's massive bull wheel at the top of Aspen Mountain have disabled the lift for two of the busiest days of the year.

Spokesman Jeff Hanle says the closure on Monday and Tuesday could last longer if the Aspen Skiing Company cannot find a replacement part.

During a routine inspection Sunday, a maintenance worker noticed oil leaking in the wheel at the top of the gondola. The gondola was closed because of safety concerns.

A shuttle is being provided at the gondola plaza to take skiers and snowboarders over to the Shadow Mountain lift. They also have the option of riding the Little Nell and Bell Mountain chairlifts to the mountaintop.
