DENVER, Colo. (CBS4) – Vandals made off with a stone lion from the Buddhist center located at 11th Avenue and Marion Street in the middle of the night late last week.

Seven residents live there and say that they heard noise but didn't know what it was. They later found the entry way torn up and a statue missing.

"It came as a surprise the vandalism occurred on the same day I arrived here and it's hard to know what to make of these things," said Lucy James, the new teacher at the Kadampa Meditation Center.

The vandals stole one of two, 60-pound lion statues, which have been in the house for generations. They left the inside of the center untouched.

No motive or reason for the theft is known. Residents hope that it was just a prank.

News of the vandalism has spread and inspired people to lend a hand.

"We have had people offering to make donations to cover the cost of repairing our front area which is so kind. And not just Buddhists, people different faiths," said Kate Franklin another member of the center.
