5-Year-Old Dies After Fire In Colorado Springs Apartment

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP/CBS4) - Authorities say a 5-year-old boy has died after an apartment fire in Colorado Springs.

Police say the boy and an adult woman were taken to a hospital after the fire was reported around 9 a.m. Friday. Police say the woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

Fire Department spokeswoman Sunny Smaldino told the Colorado Springs Gazette both suffered from smoke inhalation.

Noe Ruiz watched as firefighters pulled the two out of the building.

"I just saw the fire department bring out some little kid and they were doing CPR to him," Ruiz said.

Neither of the victims' names have been released, and police have not disclosed their relationship. Neighbors believe it was a mother and son.

An emergency autopsy was performed Friday afternoon but the results haven't been released.

Fire officials investigating the cause of the blaze were looking for signs of arson well into the evening. They described the scene as a mattress fire.
