Judge Rejects Lawsuit Over New Colorado Election Law

DENVER (AP) - A judge has rejected a lawsuit seeking separate vote-counting in local elections with residency deadlines that differ from the ones set in a new Colorado law.

The decision came late Monday in a lawsuit filed by the state Libertarian Party.

The suit was prompted by a new state law allowing same-day voter registration.

Libertarians asked a Denver judge to require separate vote-counting for local races with different residency deadlines.

Libertarian Party chairman Jeff Orrok told The Denver Post that the law discriminates by setting different requirements in elections involving municipal races, local school districts and special districts.

The lawsuit accused county clerks across the state of improperly disregarding or misinterpreting residency requirements and allowing ineligible voters to register or change their addresses.
