LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Longmont are searching for vandals who tipped over more than 100 headstones in the town's Mountain View Cemetery on Saturday.

According to police, the vandals also destroyed a granite Civil War memorial by knocking it from its base, breaking it into pieces and taking the statue's head.

The Longmont Times-Call reported that cemetery manager Tracey George said she believes at least two vandals have targeted the cemetery four times since July 6, mostly tipping headstones from their bases.

George estimated that replacing the Civil War statue will cost approximately $20,000.

"I think that is the thing that makes me the sickest," she told the Times-Call of the damaged statue.

In past years the statue served as a focal point for annual Memorial Day remembrances.

Anyone with information is asked to call Longmont police.
