Herpin Files Signatures To Challenge Morse

DENVER (AP) - A former Colorado Springs councilman has turned in signatures to challenge a Democrat facing a recall election over support for new gun restrictions.

Republican Bernie Herpin says he turned in more than 1,600 nominating petitions Monday to face Democratic Senate President John Morse in the Sept. 10 election. The Colorado Secretary of State's office needs to verify the signatures. Candidates need 1,000 valid signatures to get on the ballot.

Morse and Pueblo Democratic Sen. Angela Giron are facing recall challenges. They both supported gun legislation that limits the size of ammunition magazines and expands background checks on firearm purchases to online and private sales.

Former Pueblo police officers George Rivera plans to challenge Giron. He turned in petition signatures last week.
