MESA COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A motorcyclist was killed Saturday evening after hitting an elk on eastbound Interstate 70 in Mesa County.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, at 6:40 p.m. a 2012 Harley-Davidson had just passed another vehicle and was returning to the right lane when it collided with an elk crossing the highway.

“The motorcycle then traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided with a guardrail,” Sgt. Mike Baker with the State Patrol said in a statement.

Timothy Parker, 48, of Vail, was ejected from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected in the crash.

The elk was not found.
