DENVER (CBS4) – The Colorado Rockies are the first major league team to plant a garden at a ballpark.

The Coors Field Garden, located on the north corner of the stadium, made its debut on Thursday morning. The Rockies teamed up with Aramark concessions staff and Colorado State University students to plant organically grown vegetables and herbs, and they believe it’s the first of its kind.

“Aramark has brought us in as a partner to create a sustainable garden for Coors Field,” said Brian Dunbar with CSU’s Institute for the Built Environment. “So it’s a demonstration garden and (horticulture and landscape architecture) students are learning.”

“We started the plants up in Fort Collins, got the seedlings going and now we’ve got a nice variety of plants.”

The offerings will include tomatoes, peppers, beans, parsley, thyme and rosemary, and they will be sold at the Mountain Ranch Club inside the stadium.

“There will be little notes so the people know they’re eating things that were grown right here.”

The 600 square foot garden and features a series of raised beds that are laid out in the shape of a ballpark. They were built using wood from trees killed by pine beetles in Colorado’s high country.

Aramark says they might try to start gardens at other ballparks in the country if the Coors Field garden turns out to be a success.
