Steroid Investigation Under Way Into 'American Gladiator' Officer

DENVER (CBS4) - CBS4 has learned that Denver police officer Abbegayle Dorn, who gained notoriety for appearing on the television show "American Gladiators," is the focus of an internal Denver police investigation stemming from her alleged procurement and use of steroids.

"Officer Dorn is under investigation," said Denver Police Lt. Matt Murray, confirming the CBS4 investigation.

Murray said Dorn has been transferred from active street duty to "administrative duties" during the investigation.

"We can confirm she is under investigation but we are not going to talk about any details of the investigation," said Murray. "We don't discuss internal affairs investigations."

Dorn did not respond to electronic messages and phone calls from CBS4 seeking comment on the probe.

Three law enforcement sources familiar with the case say the FBI investigated Dorn's possible connections to steroid purchases more than a year ago, but no criminal case was ever filed. However, the Denver Police Department apparently continued the federal steroid investigation.

Sources say Dorn could potentially face termination if she lied to investigators about her involvement in the steroid trade.

Dorn has spent time as a bodybuilder and professional fitness model and appeared on "American Gladiators" in 2008 along with a second female Denver police officer.

In 2010, a Denver man filed a federal lawsuit against Dorn and other officers saying Dorn used excessive force on him following a party in LoDo. That case was settled out of court in 2011. An attorney for the plaintiff said the City of Denver paid his client $30,000 in an out-of-court settlement.
