Man Takes Plea Deal In Bizarre Pedophile Extortion Case
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) – A man charged in a bizarre plot out of Loveland to extort money from pedophiles accepted a plea deal on Tuesday.
Dustin Canup, 20, was arrested in the case along with his girlfriend, Sareena Morrison, 18.
Canup was in court for his preliminary hearing Tuesday. He was facing felony charges for attempting to lure child predators and robbing them back in January at a Loveland motel.
Police say Canup and Morrison met with who they thought was a man and his 6-year-old daughter for sex at the motel. Canup was arrested by undercover officers. During a search police found a large 12-inch knife and a pair of handcuffs Canup said he would use on the pedophile.
Canup told police their plan was to rob the man, kidnap the child and raise it as their own.
In court Canup pleaded guilty to felony extortion. In exchange for the plea bargain all other charges against him were dropped.
“It went alright. It could have gone better, it could have gone worse,” Canup told CBS4.
The plea bargain he accepted is for attempted criminal extortion. That is a felony and he could face up to 6 years in prison. The plea bargain also means he has waived his right to a jury trial.
Canup’s sentencing date is set for June 18.
