Durango Firm Settles Age Discrimination Suit

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) – A Colorado company has agreed to pay a total of $90,000 to two men to settle an age discrimination lawsuit.

A judge approved the settlement Monday between the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Western Energy Services of Durango Inc., which is a subsidiary of the La Plata Electric Association Inc.

The commission had alleged that in 2009, the company didn’t hire two journeymen linemen electricians for jobs in New Mexico because of their ages. Dennis Thomas was then 61, and Eric Camron was 72. Two men in their 20s later got the jobs.

The company is settling but denies any wrongdoing.

As part of the settlement, the company has agreed to post its anti-discrimination policy, train employees on anti-discrimination laws, and to make periodic reports to the EEOC.
