Driver Injured After Semi Strikes Bridge At I-25 & Speer

DENVER (AP/CBS4) — One person has been transported to the hospital after a semitrailer hit a bridge over Interstate 25 near downtown Denver.

The truck, traveling southbound on I-25, crashed into the bridge at Speer Boulevard on Monday, knocking loose some concrete and rebar.

A large piece of debris from the bridge struck a car, pinning the driver inside. Police say that driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Two other cars were involved in the accident, but no other injuries have been reported.

"It was a female driver. She did suffer some head injuries from the debris that fell down on her car, it did pierce the windshield as well as the top of the car," Sonny Jackson with Denver police said.

Police photos show one car with a smashed windshield.

The highway reopened Monday afternoon after inspectors checked to make sure the bridge was stable.

The driver of the semi was cited with careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury.
