The Magic Bullet Against Cancer?

Written by Dr. Dave Hnida, CBS4 Medical EditorA new study shows a nice drop in cancer rates among men who take a simple, daily, multiple vitamin.

It's a decent study -- more than 14,600 men followed over an 11 year period who either took a "Centrum Silver" or a placebo every day.

Those men who took the vitamin had an 8 percent lower rate of cancer than those who took the placebo. (A nice commercial for Centrum!)

But is the vitamin the game changer here? Hard to say since the study just lumped all of the men in both groups into one giant pool of lifestyles. We don't know who ate well, exercised, didn't smoke or was of normal weight.

And those are the good things we know for a fact that will lower cancer rates -- and by much more than 8 percent. In fact, we believe anywhere from 50 to 80 percent of cancer are influenced by lifestyle choices -- over the course of a lifetime, not just 11 years.

So, take your vitamins as you wish -- they probably won't hurt. They may even help ... some. Eight percent isn't that bad a number.

But more probably depends on how you live the rest of your day, every day. Don't depend on the magic bullet.
