Von Miller Says Defense Needs To Play Better On 3rd Downs

DENVER (CBS4) - Normally football teams want the opponent in a third and long situation when on defense, but the New England Patriots had the Denver Broncos' number on Sunday and Von Miller agrees the defense has to play better in those situations.

On one play the Broncos had the Patriots in a third and 17 situation and Danny Woodhead ended up running the ball for a first down.

"It was really just like a 'give up' down. They ran the ball just trying to get great field position and Danny Woodhead happened to make a great play," Miller said. "You can't give up those types of downs and expect to win games."

Miller said he kind of had a feeling it was going to be a running play.

"It was just that they executed the play really well," he said.

Something seemed to change for the Broncos at halftime.

"We were just a little bit more urgent. We felt like we had a chance to win the game and everybody was trying to capitalize on the opportunity."

Miller said he thinks the Broncos made some improvements in the offseason. Last year they lost 45-10 to the Patriots in New England and this year the game was a little closer.

"I think we're making progress every week. It might not show in the wins category, but we're definitely making progress. We've just got to keep taking it one day at a time."

It's been a long time since the Broncos have beat the Patriots, but Miller doesn't believe in the theory that one team just has another's number.

"I don't feel that way; maybe in college, but not in the National Football League."
