COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – Police in Colorado Springs are searching for a thief who stole an urn containing the ashes of a boy.
The ashes were taken from a woman who was moving to Colorado Springs from out of state. It contained the ashes of Wendy Witte’s two-year-old son who was shot and killed 15 years ago.
The urn was inside a backpack in Witte’s car, which was parked at a Radisson Hotel when it was stolen.
The urn was located in a dumpster at the Timbers Apartments, about four miles from where it was stolen. The ashes were still inside.
“They probably didn’t even know that there was an urn in there. I just hope they realize that it’s an urn and they just didn’t toss it in the trash somewhere or break into it, not knowing it’s an urn,” Witte said, before finding out on Sunday that the urn had been found.
The urn was found by someone who wanted to remain anonymous.
Witte said she’s grateful to have it back in her possession.
