Pedestrian Dies In Hit & Run Near City Park, Suspect Turns Self In

DENVER (CBS4) - A man died Sunday night in a hit-and-run collision near Denver's City Park and a suspect turned himself into police on Monday.

The man was killed while he was crossing the street at about 9 p.m. near 17th and Garfield.

Traffic investigators told CBS4 the person, identified as Shawn Crane, 48, was dragged nearly an entire block and that the driver drove off to the east on 17th.

Authorities said they were searching for a dark or black colored SUV with front-end damage and possibly a cracked windshield. But on Monday police said Mark D. Deleon, 47, called police and said he wanted to turn himself in. He was interviewed by police and then arrested.

Police said Crane did not use a crosswalk.

"The reality is in some of these collisions pedestrians are partially at fault, too, when they do this type of action and had the vehicle stuck around at the scene to render aid, they may not have been charged with anything at this time," Denver police spokesman Sgt. Brian Conover said.

Anyone with more information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
