Chaparral High Students React To Death Of Assistant Principal

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Dive teams on Monday morning recovered a body of a man from the Cherry Creek Park Reservoir.

The principal of Chaparral High School sent home a letter to staff, parents and students telling them that the school's Assistant Principal Todd Vogel had been missing since Saturday from the reservoir where an accident happened.

At 9 a.m. search and rescue dive teams confirmed they had recovered the body they had been looking for since Saturday.

"There's zero visibility in this reservoir and many lakes in Colorado, so you can't see," Becky O'Guin with South Metro Fire and Rescue said. "It's important that you have some point of reference whenever you're leaving a boat or going down deep, that you're connected to somebody else."

Family and friends of Vogel were out on the docks on Monday when the body was recovered. The family has not issued a comment.

On Facebook on Monday the Chaparral High School community expressed their grief and condolences to Vogel's family in what is clearly a difficult time.

Vogel was a father of four young children.

"He was a guy when you talked to him; he talked about his kids all the time," Assistant Superintendent Dan McMinimee told CBS4.

Students wore the color blue in honor of Vogel on Monday. Blue is the school's color.

"Were a family at Chaparral and we'll always support them and be there for them," student Victoria Austin said. "He really tried to communicate with the students and be a big part of their life. He wasn't really one of those administrators who don't pay attention to a student unless they're in his office."

Douglas County Schools representatives told CBS4 they have counselors on hand for anybody who needs them.

Vogel had been at Chaparral High School for the past five years.
