State troopers search for a human smuggling suspect on I-70 in Jefferson County on Wednesday (credit: CBS)
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- A routine traffic stop has turned into a human smuggling investigation. One suspect is still on the run from authorities.
The investigation started when a Colorado State Patrol officer noticed a speeding SUV along Interstate 70 in Mount Vernon Canyon a couple of miles east of Lookout Mountain.
During the traffic stop the state trooper noticed something wasn’t right and said he suspected that people were being smuggled.
Two of the suspects ran from the car and into a ravine. One suspect was arrested but police are still looking for the other suspect.
Ten of the 11 people in the car are in custody at an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement facility.
Two troopers were hurt during the chase with minor to moderate injuries.
