Jogger Remembered After He Was Struck And Killed By SUV

DENVER (CBS4)- Family and friends gathered to remember a jogger who was struck and killed by an SUV on Easter Sunday.

Michael Sanders was hit by an SUV April 8 right in front of Lifesource Adventist Church in southwest Denver. That SUV then continued to smash into a home.

Sanders was killed. The resident suffered a bruised spine.

The pastor of Lifesource Adventist Church said even though Sanders wasn't a member of the church, the community wanted to remember him and expressed great sorrow over his tragic passing.

Sanders' family traveled to Denver from Texas to place a cross on a tree close to where he died. Others have been placing physical memories there since the collision happened.

"To have lost someone who they loved who dedicated his life to helping others was difficult for them," said student pastor Gale Hendrick. "Sunday was supposed to be a celebration for most Christians and to have him die on our front lawn was very tragic and difficult to comprehend."

Sanders was a former Army medic and avid rock climber. His friends have struggled with his death.

"It is crazy, if you had ever been around him and seen him do something much more life threatening than running down the street," said Sander's friend Brian Sordin.

Sanders had left the Army a few months ago. He had plans of pursing a nursing career.

"He wanted to continue to help people with his medical training. He used to be with search and rescue, he rescued plenty of people," said Sordin.

A candlelight vigil was held Friday on the lawn of Lifesource Adventist Church.

The driver of the SUV has not been charged. Police continue to investigate the possibility that a medical issue may have caused the deadly collision.
