Body Found In Burned Barn South Of Buena Vista

BUENA VISTA, Colo. (AP) -- Chaffee County sheriff's deputies looking for a man who escaped custody have found a body in a burning barn near Buena Vista.

Sheriff's officials say Colorado corrections officials alerted them Thursday that 46-year-old David Butler was likely in the Mount Princeton area south of Buena Vista. Butler was wanted on an original charge of homicide and was said to have "violent tendencies."

Deputies found a pickup truck registered to Butler in a field off County Road 321 and looked for him nearby. Around 3:30 p.m., Undersheriff John Spezze noticed smoke from a nearby barn. Firefighters found a body inside that was burned beyond recognition.

The body wasn't immediately identified. An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Friday.

The search for Butler continued until dark.
