Colorado Illegal Immigrant Tuition Bill Introduced Again

DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakers will try again to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who graduated from state high schools.

Democratic Sen. Michael Johnston of Denver is introducing the legislation Wednesday. Five previous attempts have failed but lawmakers have made modifications over the years to make the proposal more appealing to Republicans. This time the bill would give colleges the option to opt-out of giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition.

The out-of-state tuition rate can be three times more expensive than the in-state rate. Supporters of the legislation say the higher rates illegal immigrant students have to pay is a roadblock to education. Republicans say the bill incentivizes illegal immigration.

About a dozen states have similar tuition legislation for illegal immigrants, including Illinois, Kansas and Texas.

Any legislator who votes in favor of this should be tried for treason. These people are BREAKING THE LAW and you want to REWARD THEM?!?! My son is going to Front Range Community College because of the cost of education, and we are paying OUT OF POCKET! My wife is a LEGAL immigrant. You people who support this make me sick. No wonder this country is going straight to hell. You’re punished for doing things the right way, and rewarded for breaking the law. Man, I pry I never get diagnosed with a terminal disease….

The country is broke because Wall streets executives got bailed out, not because we are going to provide instate tuition to student’s in this country, any type of education is good for the country, and most of the student’s were raised here and see themselves as nothing else but American…… If your going to blame anybody blame the misconception you have on this issue.

I agree, it’s time to stop spitting in the faces of people in this country who are law abiding. This will further open the floodgates. Regarding your last sentence, it is the Americans who are bankrupted by healthcare costs, never the illegal. ( I work in healthcare and see it daily.)

      • Clay

Sorry Alicia. I misunderstood your post.

      • Alicia

To clarify, this senator is spitting in the faces of citizens by rewarding illegal criminal behaviour.’

    • cricket23

My Question is where would these illegal aliens students legally work after they graduate from college?

My gues is at some point in time, another bill will come forward from a Colorado Congressman or Senator requesting American citizenship for those thousands of illegal alien students and if approve, the students in return will request permission to sponsor their illegal alien relatives under the “Chain Migration” act (Google it)

You see how this works and only the Republicans have been able to stop the Democrats from passing it. Remember that the next time the (Democrats) come up for re-election!

  • Jerry L. Casebolt

Sen Johnston, what part of “ILLEGAL” don’t you understand?

  • Clay

Sorry Alicia. They are here ILLEGALLY. We do not award bad behavior.

  • ken

Throw them in jail instead of rewarding them.

  • Monte Gray

By the government’s reasoning I should allow an intruder in my home to move in and I pay for his/her education. Why the hell are we giving these criminals anything but a swift kick in the ass home? Any Senator who votes in favor of this needs to be removed from his/her position and tried for treason!!

    • irv1986

Looks like you like cheap food prizes, cheap labor and cheap products… Maybe we should blame you for the cause of attracting illegal immigration……

Education benefits all of us, who knows maybe one these kids might find the cure to Cancer…..

      • cricket23

Let them find a cure in their own country!

  • mildmannered

We had to pay out-of-state tuition after moving to Colorado from another state.

My child is born here, on dean’s list, works parttime. This indeed is a slap in the face to people playing by the rules.

And how much does proposing this issue cost, seeing as how it has been defeated 5 times previous?

Federal law passed in 1996 prohibits illegal aliens from receiving in-state tuition rates at public institutions of higher education. Specifically, Section 505 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623(a)) states: “an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State (or a political subdivision) for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident.”

That means if you give in-state tuition to illegal aliens, then you have to give it to anyone else, which includes legal immigrants and students from other states!

      • cricket23

Since ‘1996’, federal immigration law has prohibited illegal aliens from
obtaining a postsecondary education benefit; however, States have found a
means around federal law. State Legislatures, including, California,
Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and
Washington, have all successfully enacted legislation that provides in-state
tuition benefits for “illegal aliens” based on where a student went to high
        school, not immigration status.

Nice point, but you cannot argue the fact that they are here illegally, no one would mind if they followed the rules and applied for citizenship, what you’re forgetting is that United States Citizens are having to pay out of state tuition, on their own, follow the same rules for everyone, then there will be no blame.

      • Joe

Maggie, be realistic. These Latinos, CAN NOT APPLY for citizenship. Maybe u need to open the books more often and see that these kids are sons and daughters of farm people w/o an edducation. Parents that all they wanted was a better N more prosperous future for their family. I bet you anything that they want to become US citizens, but the system does no let them. It’s all politics like always. I really hope that our government does something positive for our immigration laws

    • cricket23

How about we blame the parents that slipped across our borders in the middle of the night?

  • Maggie

And US citizens have to pay for their childrens education out of pocket, those of us who work that is, I put two children thru college as a single parent with not one penny of assistance. Breaking the LAW doesn’t mean given them a reward. Sen needs to be voted out of office in my opinion.

  • A.G.Trespass

Given the H.S. graduation rate, particulary in Denver, The morals of most Mexicans.. How many could there possibly be..8 at the most.

  • ML

Consider the following. These students cannot work here legally, so
who will reap the reward’s of their higher education?
The answer is, not the United States and her taxpaying citizens.

Should current federal and state immigration law be successfully
altered, allowing these graduate adult students to obtain gainful
employment in the United States, who will they be hurting then? The
answer is American citizens, who need skilled employment jobs.

    So— a “lose-lose” for America.

It is completely obvious the elected officials in this state don’t serve the people who elected them. With school closures, tuition increases, teacher cuts, program elimination you would think that these supposedly intelligent people would be able to understand that you cant keep adding to the financial burden that citizens of this state already face. These elected officials are so arrogant that they believe that while increasing the burden on the school systems that they also deserve large raises and bonuses. These actions are criminal. Providing the service to a known law breaker is like aiding and abetting in the ongoing crime taking place. It is high time for lawmakers and politicians to get their heads out of the hole and start making financially responsible decisions. The US continues to decline on the world list for education. Isn’t it time we start focusing our efforts on educating or own countrymen and women? WE THE PEOPLE DEMAND IT AND WE SAY STOP GIVING OUR COUNTRY AWAY TO FOREIGNERS !!!! GET IT, GOT IT, GOOD !!!!

  • Anon254

I really think they should not give any illegal immigrant any public education including elementary school, middle school, high school, make them come here legally and pay taxes like everyone else for education then they will be welcomed to go to these schools.
