Colorado GOP Sen. King Won't Run For Re-Election

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Senate Republican Leader Bill Cadman says GOP Sen. Keith King has "gracefully bowed out" of running for re-election in a new Democratic-drawn district that pits both lawmakers in the same El Paso County seat next year.

Cadman said Tuesday he's "extremely torn" about losing King, who will serve his last session in the Legislature next spring. The Colorado Supreme Court approved new legislative districts Monday.

Legislative maps for the state House and Senate are redrawn every 10 years to account for population changes. Republicans on a commission working on the maps unanimously opposed the districts drawn by Democrats.

Cadman called King a friend and "incredible mentor" and praised his knowledge on education issues.

House Republican Leader Amy Stephens is also in the same district as a fellow Republican with the new maps.
