Skating Rink At Skyline Park Officially Open For The Season

DENVER (CBS4) - Visitors to the 16th Street Mall can now skate for free at Skyline Park. The ice rink sits next to the clock tower on Arapahoe Street.

The Denver Figure Skating Club helped break the ice. It's the second year for the rink to offer free skating to the public with the option to bring skates or rent a pair for just $2.

"We had about 31,000 skaters over the season last year, so we're so excited about what this year can bring. Just different programming, learn to skate," Southwest Airlines spokesperson Michelle Agnew said.

Southwest Airlines sponsors the rink.

"Whatever skill level you are, you are welcome to show up and we'll help you out," an employee said.

Other programming for the season includes DJs every Friday night.

"Saturday nights, we'll have live bands and Sunday afternoons we'll have family entertainment," Lorinn Rhodes with Downtown Denver Partnership said. "And then during Christmas break we'll have a couple special movie nights at the rink."

"We also have the Southwest porch at Skyline Park. Parents can enjoy an adult beverage or hot cocoa while watching the kids skate," Agnew said.

Unlike last year the rink will be open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with reduced hours.

"We're in a perfect location to be a part of your downtown activities. Have dinner at a restaurant and go skating afterwards," Rhodes said.

"Last year we had six marriage proposals, we had a wedding photo shoot. I think the possibilities are just endless for this season," Agnew said.
