Phoenix Man Charged In Colorado Springs Slaying
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A 23-year-old man accused of killing a decorated Iraq war veteran in Colorado Springs has been charged with first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping.
Prosecutors say Rodrigo Rubio of Phoenix kidnapped and gunned down 27-year-old Matthew Moore outside the Calvary Baptist Church on June 30. Rubio is accused of killing Moore during a hunt for drug dealers who sold a former college official a bag of dirt for $600 instead of heroin.
KRDO-TV reported Tuesday that Rubio is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
Police say co-defendant Michael Berkowitz, the former director of enrollment at the University of Phoenix, hired Rubio as a body guard and ordered him to kill Moore. He is charged with being an accessory to first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping.
