Unknown Substance On Highway Blamed For I-70 Crashes

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Officials with the Colorado State Patrol are asking for the public's help in finding the person responsible for leaving a soil-like substance behind on Interstate 70 Monday morning and causing a series of wrecks.

Ten cars and two motorcycles were involved in the crashes, and the eastbound lanes of the highway were completely closed for a little more than 2 hours.

It happened just after 6 a.m. near the Kipling exit and later on emergency officials moved the closure back to Ward Road. There was also a similar problem that caused an accident where eastbound I-70 merges with Interstate 76.

Officials said they are investigating what vehicle spilled the substance and what the substance was.

"We're looking for a semi tractor with a trailer and the trailer would have been hauling some sort of landscaping material and it dumped onto the roadway," said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Nate Reid.

Six people were hospitalized after the crash. None of the accidents were described as being life threatening.

"Of those six patients, three were treated and released, three remain in the facility and they are currently undergoing different evaluations," Wendy Forbes with Exempla Lutheran Medical said. "They are all considered to be in stable condition."
