Victim In Post Office Crash Says She'll Pray For Driver

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - A woman who was among those hurt on Tuesday when a car crashed into a post office and plowed all the way up to the counter says she thought she had lost her legs right after the dust settled.

Susan Westerfall was taken away in a stretcher after being pinned for a short time between the car and the counter at Boulder's Valmont post office branch, located at 55th and Valmont. About 20 people were in the office at the time and four people were hurt.

At about 10 a.m. Westerfall says she was waiting in line inside the building.

"All of a sudden I was propelled forward. I was pinned against the counter. There was a loud noise, crashing noises and I actually thought it was a bomb," Westerfall told CBS4.

Westerfall says she sustained multiple deep bruises and that it now hurts to breathe.

Police say Gloria Sawyer, 89, was driving the car. She told police she was just trying to park her car and her foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal. She was cited for careless driving and will have to retake her driver's test if she wishes to keep driving.

Westerfall says doesn't have any anger towards Sawyer.

"I'll pray for her and send her lots of love because she must be feeling very shaken up and also pretty horrible about this."

Westerfall says she has gained some new perspective after the crash. She says it reminds her that it's "another chance to appreciate each day."

"I love life and I appreciate every day that I wake up. Today that had a whole new meaning."

Post office officials said this was the fourth similar accident at the building since July 2010. An accident last month involved an 88-year-old driver.
