Woman Arrested After Infant Dies In Northeast Denver

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police are investigating the death of child in the northeast Denver.

Police said officers were called to the 2700 block of East 33rd Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on a report of an infant not breathing.

"When officers arrived they located the 8-month-old that had been inside a bathtub. The child was transported to a nearby hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time later," Det. John White with Denver police said in prepared statement.

White said the child's mother, Muriel Keer, 39, is being held for investigation of child abuse resulting in death. The child has been identified as 10-month-old Aldrich Leathers.

Neighbors told CBS4 Keer was a single mother. Keer had told them the father lives in California. She also told neighbors she wanted to go back to school and was currently looking for a job.

"If it wasn't for my kids that I have, I was just holding their hands, I would have just cried, and I did cry," neighbor Pat Scott said. "It's really sad that someone would put a child in a bathtub; we don't know exactly what happened, but ,'Where were you?' What were you doing? Why was the child in the bathtub by himself?' That just hurts."

An autopsy will be completed by the Denver coroner's office to determine the cause and manner of death.
