Woman Gives Birth On Side Of I-225
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Paramedics had to rush to help a woman giving birth on the side of the highway on Friday morning.
Layla Russell was born shortly after 7 a.m. on Interstate 225 and 6th Avenue.
Copter4 flew over the scene and captured video of emergency crews carrying a newborn to a waiting ambulance. Moments later, mother Corri Russell was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.
Corri and Josh Russell shared the news that Layla is a healthy 6 pounds and 13 ounces. She's also 20 inches long.
A firefighter who helped deliver the baby told CBS4 the moment they got there the mother was in labor and that the first thing they needed to do was make sure both the mother and the baby were healthy.
Emergency crews clamped the umbilical cord, dried the baby off and made sure it was warm.
Steve Reynoldson with the Aurora Fire Department said Josh, the father, had a lot of emotions.
"He was calm, scared and in shock somewhat, which I would be, too," he said.
