National Search For New Denver Police Chief Begins

DENVER (AP) - Denver Mayor Michael Hancock says a national search for a new city police chief has begun.

Hancock announced Friday the city will pay the Police Executive Research Forum to conduct the search to find a replacement for current Chief Gerald Whitman. Hancock said during his campaign this year that he would find a police chief to take over Whitman's job after the police department was rocked by several allegations of excessive force.

Hancock's office says the group the city hired for the search has previously worked to find police chiefs in Los Angeles, Boston and Dallas. Hancock says the goal is to find a police chief to bring a new "sense of confidence and transparency" to the department.
