Florida Fugitive On Run Since 1979 Captured In Colorado
MONTROSE, Colo. (CBS4)- Fugitive Mark Barrett was arrested by deputy U.S. Marshals Wednesday morning at a cabin outside Montrose.
Barrett, 60, had been on the run since 1979.
Barrett, who also goes by the name Richard Meltzer, escaped from a Florida Department of Corrections facility where he was serving a prison sentence for murder. Barrett had been featured on America's Most Wanted in January 2010.
On July 27, Deputy U.S. Marshals and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers, dressed as firefighters, approached Barrett's cabin and talked with him concerning fire concerns in the area.
Once the deputy identified a tattoo on his hand, law enforcement officers identified themselves and Barrett was taken into custody.
Montrose County Sheriff's deputies have obtained a search warrant for Barrett's cabin. During the arrest authorities say they noticed several firearms and what appeared to be a small marijuana grow operation.
Barrett was transported to the Montrose County Sheriff's Office and will await extradition to Florida.
