Dems Pick Replacement For Legislative Vacancy

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- A longtime Weld County educator has been appointed to the state House to fill a vacancy created when Democratic Rep. Jim Riesberg of Greeley was named Colorado insurance commissioner.

Democratic officials said Dave Young was appointed Thursday to House District 50, which covers eastern Greeley, Garden City and Evans. Young has taught junior high in Greeley and is a faculty member of the University of Colorado-Denver's online education program.

Young says creating local jobs and protecting schools should be every lawmaker's focus.

Gov. John Hickenlooper named Riesberg the state insurance commissioner in June.

Under state law, a committee of members of the same political party as the departing lawmaker appoints a replacement.
