Teen's Body Pulled From Orchard Mesa Pond

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Divers have recovered the body of a 17-year-old boy who witnesses say went underwater while fishing on a private pond in Orchard Mesa, south of Grand Junction.

Mesa County sheriff's department spokeswoman Mary Gonzalez says the boy and some friends went to the pond Saturday morning.

The Daily Sentinel reports witnesses said the boy was alone in a kayak when he apparently jumped into the water to retrieve a fishing pole he had dropped.

Gonzalez says the teen was last seen in the deepest portion of the pond, which is 30 to 40 feet deep.

The boy's body was recovered around 7 p.m. Sheriff's officials didn't immediately release his name.
