CSU Student Shot While Walking With Friends In Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - The search for a gunman is on in Fort Collins after a female Colorado State University student who was walking with a group of friends early Monday morning was shot and wounded.

The apparently random crime happened near the intersection of Myrtle Street and Remington Street at about 1:50 a.m. Police said the victim, Jamie Warfield, was walking home with her friends to her home nearby after spending Sunday evening downtown.

Warfield, 22, is very close to graduating from the university, according to police.

The group of friends told authorities an SUV or truck approached slowly and that after a single gunshot Warfield fell to the ground. She was shot in the midsection and taken to the hospital.

"A car drove by, a shot was fired, it hit the 22-year-old woman and she was transported to Medical Center of The Rockies," Rita Davis with Fort Collins police said.

She was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

"I'm kind of surprised. Fort Collins is a pretty safe town, especially for this neighborhood," resident Laura Wilson said.

"At this point it's appearing a random shooting," Davis said. "There was no altercation or confrontation that occurred that would have provoked that type of activity."

Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call (970) 416-2195.
