Man Drowns While Competing In Pelican Fest Triathlon

WINDSOR, Colo. (AP) - A physician participating in a triathlon Saturday in Windsor passed away while participating in the swimming segment.

Dr. Michael Wiggins of Fort Collins was found floating facedown in Windsor Lake, where he competing in the Pelican Fest Triathlon. The 42-year-old was spotted by people in a safety canoe, and Wiggins was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies, where he was pronounced dead. Wiggins was wearing a wetsuit, as were other participants.

The (Fort Collins) Coloradoan reports that Wiggins may have had a fatal cardiac event. A deputy with the Larimer County coroner said the doctor was diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm four years ago and had been treating it.

An autopsy was planned for Sunday morning.
