Residents React After Learning About Mail Theft Case

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver are looking for a man who broke into an apartment complex and raided the mailboxes. The victims have questions for the apartment building's owner.

The mail was stolen earlier this month on North Jackson Street, just east of the Cherry Creek Mall. Surveillance video captures the suspect from two different angles. Police believe he knew what he was after.

"He was intent on getting to that building and getting to the mail," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Police said the suspect tried to conceal his identity after being caught on camera. He unscrewed the light bulb and pried open the mailbox door. The suspect then shoved all the contents into a trash bin and left.

Police believe it's a blatant attempt to steal people's identities.

"The apartment complex did what they could do. They've got locked mailboxes and a security system. But, unfortunately, this guy was pretty brazen. He didn't care about any of that," said Jackson.

Residents at the apartment complex said they haven't noticed any fraudulent charges on their accounts, yet. They're starting to watch their accounts much closer. Many didn't even know their mail had been stolen.

"I saw it open the other day. I saw the entire panel open but didn't think anything of it," said resident Peter Ruppenthal.

Residents that spoke to CBS4 said the property owners didn't tell them about the break-in.

"It's pretty surprising that I haven't found out anything until just now," said Ruppenthal.

The suspect is described as a white man, 6' to 6'3", about 195 pounds with a shaved head. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Denver police.
