Aspen Mountain To Reopen For Memorial Day

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Aspen Skiing Co. is reopening the top of Aspen Mountain for skiing and riding on Memorial Day Weekend because of heavy spring snow and cool temperatures.

Company officials say the mountain has a base of 71 inches of snow at the top. The ski area will open with 25 runs and will stay open on weekends after Memorial Day as long as conditions allow.

Rich Burkley, vice president of mountain operations, calls it the best spring skiing conditions in three years.

Aspen joins the Arapahoe Basin ski area, which says it will remain open daily through June 5 and will reopen for summer skiing for at least two, three-day weekends through June 19.

In 2006 the CBS4 travel show Colorado Getaways profiled volunteers at Aspen Highlands who march up and down the bowl in ski boots as a way to lessen the avalanche danger for skiers.
